We are committed to making Blue Hill Observatory welcoming and accessible to all visitors. While our 130-year-old hilltop facility presents some inherent challenges, our staff works hard to accommodate everyone and ensure a meaningful visit.
For questions or to request an accommodation before your visit, please contact us at 617-696-0562 or info@bluehill.org. Reaching out in advance allows us to make the best possible arrangements for you.
Getting to the Observatory
The pedestrian route from the parking lot to the Observatory along the summit road is approximately one mile in length, with an average slope of 15–20%. This road is not open to public vehicles under normal circumstances.
Special vehicle access can be arranged for visitors with mobility concerns. Please contact Observatory Facilities & Grounds at 617-696-0562 or info@bluehill.org at least 48 hours before your visit to arrange access and receive specific instructions.
Inside the Observatory
The Observatory building was constructed in several stages beginning in 1885 on the hard granite hilltop. Within the building:
Many public rooms are fully accessible to guests with limited mobility
Some areas — including the observation room and upper tower levels — are accessible by stairs only
Many exhibits can be moved to accessible areas upon request
Staff will provide accommodations for those unable or unwilling to travel to the upper rooms
The In-Depth Tour can be adapted to focus on accessible areas
The Hilltop
The hilltop around the Observatory is rocky and uneven in places, with steep slopes and abrupt changes in level. Accommodations will be provided for visitors who need assistance navigating the hilltop terrain.
