The Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center periodically offers volunteer opportunities for students and adults interested in supporting our mission of science, education, and public engagement. Volunteer roles vary throughout the year and may support visitor services, public tours, education programs, the gift shop, communications, operations, and stewardship of our historic weather data and archives.
For current opportunities or additional information, please contact us or review the listings below.
Volunteer Tour Guides are a vital part of connecting visitors to Blue Hill Observatory’s weather observation station—a National Historic Landmark and one of the nation’s longest continuously operating meteorological observatories.
Volunteers in this role are trained to lead public tours highlighting the Observatory’s 140+ year continuous Weather Observation Program, historic instruments, and scientific legacy. Volunteers must successfully complete a CORI/SORI Background Check, be able to climb three flights of stairs regularly and be available for one volunteer training session at the Observatory.
Time CommitmentIn addition to tour guiding, volunteers may support the Observatory through roles such as:
Visitor services and tour support
Gift shop and retail assistance
Education program support (non-teaching roles)
Communications and digital support
Data, archives, and research assistance
Facilities, grounds, and operations support
Professional or skill-based support (e.g., IT, finance, communications)
Volunteer roles are matched based on interests, skills, and current organizational needs. In-person, hybrid, and remote volunteer opportunities are available
Monthly Skymail, event announcements, and research summaries.
