Great Blue Hill rises 635 feet above sea level — the highest point on the Atlantic coastal plain from Boston all the way south to Miami. From the Observatory tower, visitors enjoy unobstructed 360-degree views that stretch dozens of miles in every direction on a clear day.

635 ft
Above Sea Level · Great Blue Hill, Milton MA

The highest peak on the East Coast between Boston and Miami with a clear view to the Atlantic — and on exceptional days, all the way to the mountains of New Hampshire.

What You’ll See

🌆 North & Northeast — Boston & the Harbor

The Boston skyline stands clearly on the horizon just 10 miles away. Logan Airport, the harbor islands, and on very clear days, the North Shore are all visible.

🌊 East & Southeast — The Atlantic

Open water views toward the Atlantic coast. Cape Cod can be seen on the clearest days. Great Blue Hill’s isolation on the coastal plain makes for dramatic ocean vistas.

🌄 West — Worcester Hills

The rolling hills of central Massachusetts stretch to the west. The Worcester Hills are clearly visible on most days, offering a sense of the region’s full topography.

🏔️ Northwest — Mt. Monadnock, NH

On the clearest days — usually following a cold front — Mt. Monadnock in southern New Hampshire, over 60 miles away, appears on the northwestern horizon.

The Tower

The Observatory tower was constructed in 1885 and has been continuously staffed since February 1, 1885 — the longest unbroken weather observation record in North America. The tower’s upper observation deck is the crown of any visit.

Visitors on the In-Depth Guided Tour ascend through the Observer’s Room and continue to the roof deck for the full panoramic experience. The tower access involves interior stairs — please review our Accessibility page if you have mobility concerns.

🌤️

Best Conditions

Northwest winds following a cold front bring the clearest views — often the day after a major storm passes through.
